Sports Thoughts

by Mike Organ

District 25-AA is being represented well in all areas from oneact play to track and field. Salado won the one-act play contest and the girls state golf title. District athletes brought home a truckload of medals from the state track meet and Rogers’ ball teams are still in the playoffs.

Texas won the Big XII in softball and baseball. One other team has already won a championship for the Orange. Things are great on the athletic front for the Horns. But there is a question; with the cuts expected at UT will any of them be from athletics? I would bet, NO. Academics will take the brunt of the cuts if history provides any insight.

The Rangers are in first place in the AL West and the Astros are in last place in the NL. Lance Berkman and Roy Oswalt both have said they would like to play for a winner and would waive their no-trade contracts to do so. Are they saying they would abandon their current teammates for a chance to play in the playoffs?

Did the coaches make the right choices in the athletic awards presented Monday night? If you don’t think so, take your son or daughter out of the mix and see who you come up with that would make everyone happy.
