Marie Alma Jenke
Marie Alma Mertink Jenke was born in the Warda, Texas area on August 18, 1923 to Ben A. & Alma (Schneider) Mertink. She was brought to Christ in Holy Baptism on August 26, 1923 at Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Warda, Texas by Rev. G. Buchschacher. She was confirmed on March 21, 1937 by Rev. Hermann Schmidt at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Serbin, Texas. Her confirmation verse was Revelation 3:11-”Behold, I come quickly: hold fast which thou hast, that no man take thy crown”. On her 23rd birthday, August 18, 1946, Marie married Herbert Paul Jenke at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Serbin with Rev. Hermann Schmidt officiating. Herbert and Marie had three children: Larry, Gary & Kathryn. Being an Army family, they re-located ten times in the United States while Herbert served before settling back in Giddings after his retirement in 1961. Marie and Herbert enjoyed 41 years together before Herbert’s death in 1988.
Marie passed away Tuesday, May 4, 2010 at her home in Giddings.
Funeral services were held on May 7, 2010 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Giddings with Rev. Robert Tiner officiating. Burial followed in the Giddings City Cemetery.
Marie had a great love for the outdoors, for friends and family, and for God. She enjoyed fishing, trapping and working outdoors her whole life. She loved her flowers, always carefully gathering seeds for another year’s planting. She looked forward to phone visits with her friends and enjoyed their cards and letters to the end. Raised in German culture, Marie taught her children to speak German, so that she “wouldn’t teach them English wrong”. To their spouses’ and children’s consternation, she either spoke fluent German to them or would switch from English to German in the same breath without realizing it. Marie was devoted to listening to the Lutheran Hour and Grace Lutheran Church radio broadcasts in her later years. Her faith in God was strong and never failed her. God blessed her in her final days in that only her physical health recently failed.
Marie is survived by son; Larry Jenke of Giddings, Theresa Jenke of Giddings; son, Gary & Ginger Jenke of Coldspring, Texas and daughter, Kathy & Glen Woodruff of El Campo, Texas. She has eight grandchildren and two step-grandchildren; Tonya & Ed Towns of Austin, Dawn & Jeff Faske of Giddings, Amber & Corbitt Hill of Giddings, Crystal & Alan Smith of Giddings, Hannah & Craig Williams of Livingston, Texas, Adam Jenke of Coldspring, Texas, Terri Woodruff of El Campo, Texas, Jody & Sandra Woodruff of Round Rock, Texas, Katie & Michael Kunz of Nada, Texas and Bennie & Valerie Woodruff of El Campo, Texas.
