Foods and Wine Contest

The Lee County Fair has announced the Foods and Wine Contest scheduled for Saturday, May 15, at the Lee County Fair Grounds in Giddings. All Texas residents are eligible to participate; age restrictions apply to wine competition. The Foods and Wine Contest is coordinated by the Lee County office of Texas AgriLife Extension Service.

Competition includes Homemade Wine, Homemade Salsa and Tailgater’s Best, an appetizer food contest.

The Homemade Wine contest is open to ages 21 and older. Entries may be of any variety. Wines must have been made in the past 12 months. Entries should be at least one pint and in an unlabeled bottle.

Contestants in the Homemade Salsa contest should be considered “amateur”. Heat does not determine a winning salsa, but rather heat is considered as a component in the balance of flavors. An ingredient list must be submit- ted with entries.

In keeping with the Fair’s theme, “Tailgating Heaven in Year Eleven”, the Tailgater’s Best is an appetizer food contest. Entries are not required to be prepared on the grill. Entries should be at least 12 servings. A copy of the recipe must be provided at time of entry.

Participants must pre-register. Registration deadline is May 10. There is a $10 participation fee for each exhibitor, which allows unlimited entries in all categories of the Foods and Wine Contest, as well as the Arts and Crafts Competition. Each registration includes a one day pass.

Each Grand Champion winner will receive $50 with Reserve Champions receiving $25.

Check-in is Saturday, May 15, between 1 pm and 2 pm. Judging begins at 2 pm, followed by a public tasting.
