Richard “Dick” Clare Whitehead

July 2, 1926 - March 29, 2010

Richard “Dick” Clare Whitehead was born on July 2, 1926 in Mexico, Missouri to Evered L. & Leta May (Clare) Whitehead. He was united in marriage to Reba LaVern Hall on July 30, 1950 in Troy, Missouri. He and his wife owned and operated D & R Sales, a metal building company, in Corpus Christi for many years before retiring and moving to Giddings. Dick enjoyed vegetable gardening, fishing and hunting and was an active member of the Giddings Noon Lions Club. He was elected Lion of the Year for 2003-2004.

Dick passed away on Monday, March 29, 2010 at the Country Care Plex in Giddings.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, April 1, 2010 at Phillips & Luckey Funeral Home in Giddings with Rev. Fred Jones officiating. Burial followed in the Giddings City Cemetery in Giddings.

Dick was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Bill Whitehead.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years Reba LaVern Whitehead of Giddings; 2 daughters, Sue & Roland Hurst of Houston and Janet Whitehead & Joseph Pilkinton of Austin; 4 grandchildren, Keith Clayton of Houston, Adam Clayton of Mexico, Jonathan Hurst of Austin and Andrew Hurst of Washington, D.C.; 1 niece, Barbara Jorgensen of California; 2 nephews, Scott & Margaret Whitehead of Austin and Travis Whitehead of Brownsville; 1 great niece, Chrissie & Brent Piercey of Houston; 3 great nephews, Cody Jorgensen of California, Curt Jorgensen of California and Jeremy Whitehead of Austin; cousin, John Schutty of Jefferson City, Missouri as well as other relatives, many friends and his fellow Lions Club members.

Serving as pallbearers will be Bert Hunter, Gary Pietsch, Art Salinas, Tony Brooks, Bobby Garcia and Dr. Peter Martin.
