Lady Eagles Spill Rice

9-7 in Eight
by Mike Organ

Lexington and Rice Consolidated battled to a 7-7 tie after seven innings Tuesday night. Jessica Parish led the Lady Eagles to victory with four RBIs. Parish had a single, two doubles, triple, and a sacrifice fly to knock in the runs.

Lexington opened with a run in the top of the first inning. Megan Scantlin doubled and Parish followed with her double as Lexington took a 1-0 lead. Lexington opened a bigger lead in the second as Haley Jatzlau reached on an error to start the inning. Caity Holt walked and Mackenzie Brown (PeeWee Power) banged a double to score Jatzlau. A walk to Ashton Johnston loaded the bases. Scantlin slapped a single for a run and Parish lofted a sacrifice fly to left to score Brown and give Lexington a 4-0 lead.

After Lexington failed to score in the third, Rice mounted a charge. The Lady Raiders plated five runs to take the lead 5-4. Two more Rice runs in the fourth made the score 7-4. The Lady Eagles needed a rally.

In the top of the fifth, Parish singled, moved to second and third on wild pitches and scored as the Rice catcher missed a ball. Shelby Tackett singled after all this and got to third before the third out was made. The two tying runs came in the top of the seventh inning. Parish led off with her second double, Courtney Robertson’s RBI single closed the score to one run. Tackett sacrificed Robertson to third. A Jatzlau grounder to third allowed Robertson to score the tying run.

Brown led off the top of the eighth with a one-out single. Johnston singled and Parish delivered both with a triple. Parish was thrown out trying for an inside the-park homer. The Lady Eagles held Rice without a score in the bottom of the inning to claim victory.
