Wilbert Christian Oltmann

March 3, 1921 - March 23, 2010

Wilbert Christian Oltmann was born on March 3, 1921 in Shiner, Texas to Wilhelm Friedrich & Alma Maria (Tietjen) Oltmann. He was baptized at home on March 25, 1921 by Rev. H.C. Biermann and confirmed on April 14, 1935 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Serbin, Texas by Rev. Hermann Schmidt. Mr. Oltmann was united in marriage to Else Helene Scherf on June 8, 1946 in Fritzlar, Germany. She preceded him in death on March 16, 2009 after 62 years of marriage. He served his country faithfully for over 25 years, enlisting in the U.S. Army Air Corps on October 1, 1939 and having retired on February 1, 1965 from the U.S. Air Force obtaining the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. During his military career, Mr. Oltmann served during WWII and the Korean Conflict receiving numerous citations and medals for heroic actions including a Purple Heart for injuries received during WWII. He was a former president of the Giddings I.S.D. School Board, was instrumental in the creation of the Lee County Water Supply Corporation, a member of the Giddings Rotary Club and the Lutheran Laymen’s League as well as a longtime, faithful member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Serbin. He enjoyed gardening and other agricultural pursuits.

Mr. Oltmann passed away on Tuesday, March 23, 2010 at the Care Inn of La Grange.

Funeral services were held on Friday, March 26, 2010 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Serbin, Texas with Rev. John Schmidt officiating. Burial with full military honors followed in the church cemetery.

Mr. Oltmann was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Else; his son, Clyde Oltmann; his granddaughter, Jessica Oltmann and his brother, Ben Oltmann.

He is survived by his 6 children, Callan & Linda Oltmann of West Point, Tx, Beverly & Jim Wells of Frisco, Tx, Barbara & Kent Schreyer of Duncanville, Tx, Chris & Kay Oltmann of Allen, Tx, Bonnie & Richard Schmidt of Allen, Tx and Beatrice Oltmann of Austin; 7 grandchildren, Melanie & Tom Niland of Austin, Meredith Oltmann of Los Angeles, Marian & Jed Taylor of Austin, Andrew & Shannon Schreyer of Hickory Creek, Tx, Jonathan & Sarah Oltmann of Dallas, Michael Schmidt of Allen and Patrick Schmidt of Allen; 2 great grandchildren, Luke Schreyer of Hickory Creek and Kyle Oltmann of Dallas; brother, Ernst & Edna Oltmann of Giddings; 2 sisters, Gladys & Victor Symm of Giddings and Ruth & Richard Lewis of Wolfe City as well as numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
