Twenty eight exhibitors, representing 4-H clubs and FFA chapters across the state of Texas, took the floor of Reliant Stadium, waiting for their chance of catching one of the 14 calves. Strength and determination took over for some, as scramblers began to capture the calves and pull them into the winners’ square.

In exchange for a successful scramble, the 4-H or FFA member will receive a $1,250 calf purchase certificate. The certificate is to be used for the purchase of a registered beef or dairy heifer.

This is the beginning of a yearlong project of caring for the heifer. The exhibitor, supervised by an agricultural science teacher or county extension agent, must keep accurate and detailed records.
