Lady Eagles Drop District Opener

by Mike Organ

Lexington spotted Salado five runs in the first inning, fought back to tie the game, and then lost the game on a three-run home run in the fourth inning. Lexington had difficulty getting the homestanding Red Lady Eagles out in the bottom of the first. Four hits, two walks, and a hit batter led to five Salado runs. It took Lexington three at-bats to rebound from the deficit.

Caity Holt started the Lexington comeback with a one-out single in the second. Marley Ross reached on an error, moving Holt to second. Ashton Johnston slapped one of her four singles to plate Holt. Megan Scatlin poked the ball into left field to send Ross home closing the score to 5-2. Shelby Tackett led off the third with a single. Courtney Robertson reached on a throwing error as Tackett moved to third. Haley Jatzlau reached on a fielder’s choice as Tackett scored with run- ners on first and second. Holt rapped a ball the shortstop caught and threw to third for a forceout. Mackenzie Brown reached on an error by the second baseman to load the bases. Johnston slapped another hit to get a run in to make the score 5-4 Salado. Jessica Parish walked to open the fourth with a walk, moved to second on a wild pitch, and scored on Holt’s single to tie the score.

Salado had two outs when Payne smoked a three-run homer over the leftfield fence to put Salado up 8-5. Three more unearned runs for Salado upped the score to 11-5.

Lexington managed two more runs in the top of the seventh. Johnston reached on a one-out walk. Scantlin followed with a single and Parish reached on an error as Johnston scored. Tackett hit a RBI grounder to first with Scantlin scoring. That was the end of the Lexington comeback.
