Giddings Library News Corner

By Loree Rost

Sheryl Smith-Rodgers of Blanco has put together a very interesting book, Texas Old-Time Restaurants And Cafes, which is now available at the Giddings Public Library. This book was given in memory of Fred Placke. These cafes and restaurants share long histories, established reputations, and loyal customers.

The book is divided into six parts – north, south, east, west, the heart of Texas, and somewhere in Texas. It lists 100 restaurants, many of which many of us have visited. In our area you can read about the Bon Ton in LaGrange, Burton Café in Burton, Franks Restaurant in Schulenburg, Elite Café in Waco, and Rogers Round Top Café in Round Top. The articles tell not only about the history and current standings of the establishments, but also give favorite recipes from each one.

In Amarillo you can stop at the Big Texan Steak House or try the Cattleman’s Fort Worth Steak House at the stockyards in Fort Worth. In Riviera never pass up a stop at King’s Inn and in San Antonio, be sure to visit Earl Abel’s, Tower Restaurant, Casa Rio or Mi Tierra Café and Bakery.

Gaido’s Seafood Restaurant is the place to stop in Galveston and in Houston try Felix Mexican Restaurant. Blue Bonnet Café in Marble Falls and Krause’s Café in New Braunfels. All are well worth a visit. In nearby Austin, don’t miss the elegant, and charming Green Pastures Restaurant, Hut’s Hamburgers, Matt’s El Rancho, and the ever famous The Hoffbrau.

Everyone should appreciate and enjoy this most interesting book. It also gives one a chance to some old long-time recipes.
