Sports Thoughts

by Mike Organ

The basketball team has advanced to the regional quarterfinals. The last time was about six years ago when we won district, beat Blanco, and then lost to Van Vleck in the third round. It has been a great ride so far. Let’s hope it keeps on until we reach state.

Is Lee County becoming a basketball county? Lexington boys have advanced to the third round and the Giddings girls are in the state tourney for the first time. Dime Box had a team to win also. Pretty good for one county.

The spring sports are really picking up. If it had not been for the snow, last week would have been fuller. As it was, Lexington competed in tennis, track, softball, baseball, and basketball. That was after losing Tuesday to the weather and two ball games were cancelled.

UT’s basketball team is in trouble. From #1 in the nation to #6 in the Big XII, with the season heading south. The athletes are all stars, but they are not a TEAM. It takes five playing together, not five playing as five individuals.

Speaking of such, Coach Tucker got onto a player in the game against Harper for failing to pass the ball to a teammate. He told the player, ‘That was selfish. We can’t have that. We play together or we don’t play.”
