Lexington Scratched by Burton
The Lexington Eagles played Burton in a warm-up game Friday night in Lexington. The Eagles fell to the Panthers 51-48. The Eagles were behind as much as twenty points early in the fourth quarter before mounting a sterling comeback that fell just short. The Panthers were much like the Hempstead team Lexington will face in Bi-district action Tuesday night in Bryan.
Burton jumped out to a 20-9 lead in the first quarter. The Panthers showed an extremely athletic team with good shooting skills. Burton kept up the good shooting and rebounding as they widened their lead to 37-23 at half. The Panthers had been ahead by twenty just before halftime, but the Eagles had a scoring flurry to close to within 14.
Lexington’s third quarter started just like the first half. Burton moved out to 43-23 and then the Lexington pressure started hurting the Panthers. The Eagles would cut the lead down to 14 and Burton opened it back to 18. The Eagles’ fought back to 12 and then it went back to 16. Lexington had cut the lead down to 13 by the end of the third period. The score stood at 46-33 at the start of the fourth quarter.
Lexington’s pressure defense held Burton scoreless and the Eagles cut the lead to 46-37 to cut the lead to a single digit. A conventional three-point play by Julien Clark cut the Panther lead to six points. From there Lexington cut the lead to two inside of a minute left in the game. A couple of blocked shots prevented the Eagles from tying the game. Burton was fouled on the rebound which moved the lead to three. Lexington could not manage a clean shot at the basket before time ran out.
