Lady Buffs move to 7-0 in district
The Giddings Lady Buffs moved a little closer to defending their district crown by knocking off Sealy and Bellville this past week. Giddings hosted Sealy on January 26th and jumped all over the Lady Tigers in the first quarter for a 34-5 lead. Jena Meuth and Kayla Winkfield led the scoring barrage accounting for 24 of the points. “We were hitting shots from the field and not just getting easy layups off our press,’ noted Coach Essman, ‘for a girls’ team to score like that is really something.” The Lady Buffs backed out of their press and played half court the rest of the game and went into halftime with a 48-10 lead and going on to a 72-28 victory.
Scoring for the Lady Buffs were: Kayla Winkfield, 21 (9/11 FT); Jean Meuth, 15; Maegen Bradley, 12; Jordan Masek, Catie Carney, and Darrecia Johnson, 5; Allyson Roberts, 4; Heather Belyeu, 3; and Cassidy Melcher, 2.
On Friday, the Lady Buffs traveled to Bellville and came away with a a 65-42 win. The Lady Buffs took a 43-26 lead into the locker room but only had a 12 point lead at the end of the third. “We looked like we were not fired up about playing the game and I take responsibility for that,’ said Coach, ‘we talk about playing every game like it’s your last, focusing on one game at a time, and not taking anyone for granted; I feel I didn’t get the girls mentally ready to play.” Fortunately for the Lady Buffs they can win ugly, and they have shown to be a team that can win coming from behind and holding opponents off. Scoring for the Lady Buffs were: Jena Meuth, 20; Kayla Winkfield, 15; Jordan Masek, 10; Darrecia Johnson, 7; Cassidy Melcher, 5; Maegen Bradley, 4; Caitie Carney and Alex Masek, 2. The Lady Buffs are now 22-7 on the season and currently ranked 12th by the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches. They will have hosted La Grange on Tuesday for at least a co-championship and will host Smithville on Friday which will be Senior Night.
