Lexington Nips Salado
With the score tied at 37, Tevin Lovings drove toward the basket. He saw Kaelan Blok moving uncontested to the basket. Lovings made a perfect bounce pass to Blok. Blok surely put the ball on the backboard and into the basket for the winning basket in Tuesday’s closely contested game. A Salado lad said something disrespectful to the officals and a pair of technical free throws were added by Julien Clark with 0.29 seconds left in the game.
Lexington jumped out to an early lead of 16-4 before Salado started battling back. Salado continued to creep up on the Mean Green until they tied the score at 31 with about two minutes left in the game. Salado made its big push in the third quarter when they outscored Lexington 19-8.
Both teams played excellent, hustling defense that caused the first period to be nothing more than a turnover fest. Salado turned the ball over on each of their first seven possessions before getting off a missed shot. Lexington had a bevy of turnovers also, sandwiched around Kelden Wren’s three-point shot, that opened the scoring. It looked for a while if that was going to be the only score as the defenses dominated the action.
Lexington’s defense was so dominating, it held Salado to just six points in the first half. All the Lexington players played hard, clean defense and blocked out well when Salado took a shot.
Lexington fell behind late in the fourth quarter, but rallied to win the game. Free throws were the winning margin as the Green Eagles made 11 of 17 free throws in the final stanza.
The Lexington JV lost to Salado 38-30.
