PHOTO BY MIKE ORGAN. The Lexington Eagles dropped a close game to Academy 64-57. The game was tied at 51 after Jason Washington dropped a threepointer with 5:40 left in the game. From there both teams had the opportunity to take control of the game. It did not occur until less than a minute left when Academy hit a critical three that moved the lead to 62-57 after the game was tied at 57.

The Eagles are the quickest team in the district. The Eagles’ quickness allowed them to move out to a quick lead in the opening quarter. Lexington stole the ball, caused missed, shots and got into good defensive position to change drives or draw charges in the first quarter. Academy had to make some adjustments just to get into their offense without losing the ball. Lexington’s quickness and speed made Academy get out of their press in order to get into proper defensive position.

Lexington was six-points behind at halftime. The Eagles took the third period 16-14 to close to four points heading into the final stanza. Again the Eagle defense life difficult for Academy as the fouls on both teams began to mount. The quick Eagle defense drew a couple of charges late in the game. The Eagles made scores at some critical times.

What couldn’t be done was make free throws. Lexington made only 10 of 23 charity tosses in the game and five of 10 in the critical fourth quarter. After a made free throw tied the game at 57, Academy tossed in a three and a Lexington turnover gave the Bees another two points to make the score 62-57 with 58.8 left in the game. Lexington got a clean shot at a three but it just would not fall.

The Eagles are now tied for first place with Jarrell and Academy. Lexington gets to play Academy at home the last game of the regular season. The Eagles must travel to Jarrell later in the season.

The Eagles are going to need a boisterous home crowd cheering for them in the remaining home games. The games are at APK Recreation Center on Tuesday nights. Lexington’s effort and quickness are very pleasing to the fans attending the games. See you at the game!!!!!!!
