Lady Eagles Fall to Rogers 36-32

by Mike Organ

The Lady Eagle basketball team lost for the fourth time in District 25-AA action Tuesday night. The Rogers Lady Eagles escaped with a narrow 36-42 win in Lexington. Coach Ryan Starnes had missed the preparation for the game due to a death in the family. Coach Starnes was able to return to Lexington just prior to the start of the game.

Lexington started slowly scoring only four points in the first quarter. The Lady Eagles did rally back to within one-point by halftime. The game continued closely fought the rest of the way. Unfortunately Lexington was always playing from behind.

With 1:18 left in the game Lexington called a time-out to set up a three-point play. Rachel Clark hit the trey and the game was tied at 32. The three pointer was her only basket of the game. Rogers turned the ball over in transition, giving Lexington a chance to take the lead. Lexington’s Emilie Bell got a shot inside and was fouled. Unfortunately she was unable to convert the free throws. Rogers scored after the free throws to take a two-point lead.

Lexington brought the ball up court with an opportunity to tie the game. A turnover gave the ball to Rogers. A foul on the Rogers coach’s daughter, who promptly makes both tosses and Lexington loses by four, 36-32.

One of the reasons for the Lexington loss was 35% free throw shooting. Lexington could make only seven of 20 free throw opportunities in the game. Rogers on the other hand made nine of 14 charity tosses.

Lexington had balanced team scoring for the game. Karley Wren was the leading scorer with eight points. Angel Parks dropped in seven, and Bell had six.

The Lady Eagle JV also lost to Rogers 34-30 despite Mackenzie Brown’s 21-points. Johna Alford had seven and Deandra Little had two.
