Robert Lee Cooke

March 22, 1919 - January 1, 2010

Robert Cooke, 90 of Giddings, passed away Friday, January 1, 2010 at St. Mark’s Medical Center in La Grange. He was born on March 22, 1919 in Waller County, Texas to William Howth & Lillian Dewey (Ward) Cooke. He served during WWII in the United States Army. Robert was united in marriage to Florence Smith on April 22, 1939 in Austin, Texas. He was a typesetter who had worked for the Houston Chronicle, Houston Press and the Houston Post and retired from Gulf Publishing in Houston. He was a Ham Radio Operator for most of his life and enjoyed gardening.

Mr. Cooke was preceded in death by his parents; a granddaughter, Kelly Williams and 2 sisters, Norma Williamson and Ellen Grace Fisher.

He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Florence Cooke of Giddings; 4 daughters, Carolyn Ross of Giddings, Marie & Allan Hawkins of Bartonville, Dorothy & Don Goetz of Giddings and Lisa & William Snyder of Sugarland; 7 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren; 9 great, great grandchildren; 2 sisters, Janet & Clarence Adams of Timpson and Sarah Hubble of Rocheport, MO; 2 brothers, Earl & Emma Cooke of Houston and David & Margaret Cooke of Huntsville. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews as well as his beloved cat, Cleo.

Funeral Services were held on Monday, January 4, 2010 at the Giddings City Cemetery with Tim Clayton officiating.
