Lexington Falls to Cameron in Final

by Mike Organ

The Lexington Eagles made it to the finals of the annual Lexington tourney this past weekend. Lexington reached the finals by defeating Round Top- Carmine 65-37 and winning a huge game over perennial power Moulton 60-49. The final game wasn’t as good as Lexington was defeated by Cameron 58-33.

Cameron and Lexington battled evenly throughout the first half. Cameron’s depth and speed paid off in the second half as they pulled away from the locals. Julien Clark was Lexington’s leading scorer with 14 points. Zachary Brashear, son of former Lexington Coach Robert Brashear, was one of the Yoe’s leading scorers with 12 points.

Thursday night’s game with RTC was basically over after the opening quarter. Lexington scored 24 points in the first period while limiting RTC to just eight. From there Lexington just kept on the pressure through out the game forcing turnover after turnover, converting many into two points. Clark again was the leading scorer with 17 points. Jason Washington was in double figures with 11 points. “The team played good, tough defense and played team ball on the offensive end”, said Coach Charlie Tucker.

The first win for Lexington over Moulton in nearly 40 years was Friday’s highlight. The Eagles laid a 60-49 whipping on the Bobkatz. Clark had his second 17-point output of the tourney in the win over Moulton. Anthony Robbins stepped up with 11 points and some solid play. The entire team played inspired basketball the whole game.

Lexington never let Moulton relax and Moulton reciprocated. Lexington led by as much as 15 points early in the fourth period. Moulton battled back, cutting the Eagle lead to seven points with 2:46 left in the game. Moulton started fouling and Lexington started making free throws. 11 of 15 charity tosses went through the basket in the closing minutes of the game preserving the Eagle victory.
