Middle School Basketball News

by Mark Strain

The middle school Lexington Eagles boys basketball team traveled north to take on the Rogers Eagles on Monday November 23rd. In the opening game of the 7B teams, the first period was a back and forth affair with only 4 points scored, all by Rogers. In the second period, the match up appeared a little more even, but the Rogers Eagles pulled ahead to win the game 16-8. In Miles Hannigan’s Eagle debut, he was high point scorer with 4 points. Dustin Albreight and Jason Mann each scored 2 as well.

In the 8B match, the Lexington Eagles were completely dominated by their Rogers counterparts. The Lexington Eagles could not counter the Rogers press and at the end of the first period the score was Rogers 19-0 over Lexington. The second period was more of the same where Rogers only allowed Lexington to score twice while they racked up an additional 18 points. The game ended with another Rogers win 37-5. All 5 of the Eagle points were scored by Devon Cannon. He made a 2 point and 3 point buckets.

In the 7A contest the first period was spent getting in the grove. The first period ended with a score of Rogers over Lexington 4-2 with Bryce Shirocky scoring the only points for Lexington. The second period saw Lexington take off with both Logan Lee and W. E. Meuth scoring 3 pointers and Jason Mack adding 2 buckets and Logan Lee one more to pull Lexington ahead of Rogers 14-9. The start of the third period was the exact moment when Lexington lost their momentum. Rogers employed a press on the throw in and three times in a row, Lexington lost the ball and Rogers converted with easy lay ups. While Lee added 4, Meuth 2 and Samuel Meza hit a free throw for 1, Rogers almost doubled Lexington’s output and the third period ended with a 21-21 tie. The final period was all Rogers. They added another 10 points and the young Lexington Eagles were only able to add 1 point on a free throw by Samuel Meza. For the third time that night Rogers defeated Lexington, this time with a score of 31-22.

The final game of the night, as usual, pitted the 8A teams. Lexington started out on a good pace, but was matched almost evenly by Rogers. Eriq Mitchell put up 4 and London Jacob added 3. 7 was enough to end the first period with Lexington leading 7-5. The second period is where Lexington pulled away and never looked back. Again with good effort from all players, the scoring was left to Eriq who added 7 including a 3 pointer and London a bucket and a free point. While Lexington went up 10 more, Rogers could only muster 4 points to make the score at the half Lexington over Rogers 17-9. The third period was nearly identical to the second, except Nate Holcomb hit his first three point bucket of the year, Noble Little contributed 2 and London added 5 more to end the third period Lexington 27-15. The fourth period showcased Eriq Mitchell hitting 2 more three point shots and a free throw, while London piled on 6 more points. The last 3 minutes of the contest had the Lexington Eagles practicing a passing keep away strategy. Lexington 8A over Rogers 8A 40-26. High point score for the game belonged to Eriq Mitchell with 18 points followed by London Jacob with 17, Nate Holcomb and his 3 point bucket and Noble Little with 2. Cameron Janda, Corey Strain, Jamyon Scott and Gabriel McMahon played well in support of the point makers.
