Eagles Get Post Season Honors

by Mike Organ

Chance Sherrill was named Co- Defensive Player of the Year and Mason Vecera was named Special Teams Player of the Year in voting by District 25-AA coaches last week. Four Eagles were named to the first team offense and five to first team defense.

Sherrill led the Eagles in tackles in addition to being the defensive leader on the field. Vecera was by far and away the best kicker in the district. Many of his kickoffs went into and out of the end zone. That forced the opponents to start on their own 20-yard line on numerous occasions.

Offensively Xavier Ward and Clint Hutson were named to the first team running back positions. Ward was the hard running and hard to stop inside runner and Hutson the fast, shifty, darter that racked up yards quickly. They both caught passes on routes out of the backfield. Dylan Iselt caught many passes, several of the short, shovel pass variety but he gained many important yards. Iselt had a great comeback late in the season after breaking a bone in his ankle in the first scrimmage. Taylor Roberson was the only offensive lineman chosen from Lexington. Roberson was the only Eagle selected to both first teams.

Defensively, twin Chace Sherrill joined his bother at linebacker. Josh Murray and Spencer Taylor were chosen as first team safeties. Murray played the free safety and Taylor the strong safety. Murray was the last line of defense and Taylor was up near the line of scrimmage and covering backs and tight ends on pass plays. Sherrill was part of the fierce linebacking crew from Eagleland. Chace and Chance caused many opponents to change their offensive philosophy at halftime. Tyler Moerbe had an excellent season at defensive end. He knocked down several passes at the line of scrimmage and intercepted one from close range at Florence. Roberson played defensive tackle all season long, taking on double teams so the line backers could make plays.

Selected to the second team offense were: Josh Murray at quarterback, Tevin Lovings at wide receiver, Donn Miller at center, and Will Holcomb at guard.

Selected to the second team defense were: Clint Hutson at cornerback, Xavier Ward at linebacker, Anthony Robbins at tackle, and Chase Sunvison at tackle.
