Giddings Bows to Royal(ty) 40-21

by Mike Organ

The Giddings Buffalos beat Brookshire Royal everywhere but on the scoreboard Friday night. Royal won the game 40-21 but Giddings won the statistical battle. Giddings amassed 367 yards of total offense compared to 240 for Royal. Giddings turned the ball over at the most inopportune times.

Royal scored the first three scores of the game. The first came on a 43-yard pass play and the next two came from quarterback Eric Matthews on one-yard plays. Giddings finally got on the board as Corey Brite hauled in a 15-yard pass from Connor Wehr. Giddings moved down the field just before halftime, looking to close the scoring gap. Wehr’s pass was intercepted in the end zone to quell the effort. The score at halftime was Royal 20 Giddings 6.

Royal scored first again in the second half to widen their lead to 26-6. Giddings caught fire after that. Brite scored two more times, culminating drives with three and six yard runs as the Buffs closed the score to 26-19. Once again a drive played out with a turnover as the Buffs were driving down to tie the game.

Royal proceeded to add another score to widen the lead back to 33-19 as the fourth quarter opened. Giddings still had hope as the Falcons were caught for a safety with the score 33-21 and Giddings had the ball. As the Buffs headed down the field, a fumble was picked up by a Royal defender and returned for the final score of the night.

Giddings bows out of the 2009 season with a 9-2 record. The Buffs were troubled by turnovers throughout the game. Quarterback Wehr passed for 224 yards. The Buffs lost part of their offense when tailback Eric Rimes went out in the first half with an injury.

The Buffs return several key starters for the 2010 season. The offensive line will have another season together and will be much better and stronger after a year of off-season training.
