Giddings vs. Brookshire Royal
The Giddings Buffaloes open the 2009 playoffs with a game against the Brookshire Royal Falcons Friday night at Nelson Field in Austin, beginning at 7:30. The Falcons are 5-5 for the season. Four of their five victories came in district action. Royal defeated Wharton 32-18, Columbia 35-0, Stafford 48-20, and Needville 34-28 in district action. Their lone loss in district action was to Sweeny 21-16.
Brandon Williams is the real deal at running back. Williams has 1,389 yards and 10 TDs this season. Williams had a collar bone broken in the third game of the season in 2008. Williams is averaging 7.35 yards per carry this season. The Falcons are not one dimensional as quarterback Eric Mathews has passed for 1,536 yard on 114 completions. Shane Alexander is the top receiver with 42 catches for 592 yards. Williams has caught 35 aerials out of the backfield for 480 yards.
Defensively the Falcons are a ball-hawking team They have intercepted 12 enemy passes this season. The run defense can be suspect. Royal gave up 64 points in their non-district loss to 25- AAA champion Sealy. West Orange Stark posted 49 points in their win over Royal. The only other common opponent is Bellville. The Brahmas beat Royal 28-21 in the forth game of the season.
In comparing scores and opponents, Giddings should win the game and advance to the second round against the LaVernia/Yoakum winner. Giddings needs to control speedy Brandon Williams and keep pressure on quarterback Mathews for the win.
