Boys CC to Regional

by Mike Organ

The Eagle Cross Country team qualified for Regional this past week in a meet run on Wednesday instead of Monday. The reason for the delay was the heavy rains over the entire area made cross country courses too soggy for competition. On Wednesday, the course at Salado was dry enough for competition. The course was flat for the girls and hilly for the boys.

Coach Josh Munson said, "We came in to today's meet knowing that a couple of points would be the difference between qualifying for Regionals, or not qualifying. The boys team squeaked in to the 3rd and final spot by 3 points, but unfortunately the girls team missed out by 6 points. Today's girls' race was probably the most impressive 2A district race in the state. Thirty girls finished the 2 mile course under 13:30, with most coming in seconds and split seconds apart. When runners are finishing that close together and the teams are as talented as they are in our district, every single person you beat can make a huge difference. Even though the team did not qualify for the Regional meet, Lauren Johnston's 7th place finish earned her a trip to San Antonio, where she will stand a good chance of qualifying for State individually. Seniors Ashton Johnston and Nicole Koch ran their last races for the Green and Gold, and their dedication to this program goes beyond words. The boys barely nabbed the last team spot from a much improved Lago Vista team. We did not have the luxury of having anyone run up near the front, but we ran an excellent team race, and packed in 5 guys from places 12-21. The 1 minute spread between Jason(#1) and Phillip (#5) was our tightest grouping of the year. We need to keep this same spacing, but work on getting our times lower if we hope to improve on our 9th place finish at Regionals last year. In the JV races John Turner and Raquel Hernandez each ran really well to place in the top 3. At the end of the day, we left everything that we had on this day, on the course. With a district this competitive and this evenly matched we could race 10 more times, and get different results each time. On this day we were the 5th and 3rd best, and that is all that matters. The girls will learn from this and use it to fuel them next year. Five of seven varsity girls return, along with Raquel and Deja. The boys team and Lauren will race for a trip to the State meet on Saturday, November 7th, at Brooks City Base in San Antonio."
