Minister's Message

Feeding the Hungry
by Charles Nicholson and Rev. Linda O'Neal Text: Matthew 25:31 - 45

Jesus tells us in the book of Matthew that when we give food to the hungry, to the "least of these," it is the same as giving food to him! Over the years many churches have had food pantries here in Lexington. This year, the mission of feeding the hungry in Lexington has been adopted by the good folks at Tanglewood Baptist Church, and thanks to their leadership and to the cooperation of the Ministerial Alliance, by the whole community!

On the first Friday of the month from Noon to 3:00 p.m., the food pantry at Tanglewood Baptist Church is open. Since March, we have had the Lexington Mobile Food Pantry come to the Square on the third Thursday of the month from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. In October 2009, the Mobile Food Pantry served 125 families!

Charles Nicholson and Rev. LeRoy Smith from Tanglewood Baptist Church asked the Lexington Ministerial Alliance to help with the cost of the Mobile Food Pantry. It is sent to us from Capital Area Food Bank in Austin. It costs $600 per month. Today, it is financially supported by its parent church, Tanglewood Baptist, and by these churches: First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), Lexington and Blue United Methodist Churches, The Lighthouse, LeRoy Smith's New Birth Ministries, Faith Temple, Holy Family Catholic Church, St. James Lutheran Church, and the First Baptist Church of Lexington.

It is also supported by the City of Lexington, the Lions' Club, and Granny's Restaurant and some individual donors. We appreciate the approximately twenty people who volunteer to help hand out the food on Thursdays. We also appreciate the crew who deliver sacks of food to some of our residents every month.
