Robert L. "Bob" Mathis
He and Rosemary Crawford were married in 1950 in a Methodist Church in Odessa.
Bob received his Masters in history and science. He began his career in education in 1950. He was in Uvalde ISD from 1950 to 1956, Kerrville ISD 1956 to 1958, 1958 to 1960 in Edinburg ISD. 1960 to 1976 he was Director for National Western Life Insurance. From 1976 to 1978 he was in Waelder ISD. During the summer of 1978, Bob came to Thorndale ISD. He served as a teacher, basketball and football coach during the 1978-1979 school year. In 1979, he became the principal for grades 7 through 12. He served in this position until June 1991 when he retired from education. After his retirement he worked at Maxwell Dealership in Taylor. Thorndale ISD writes, "Mr. Mathis will always be remembered for his smile, his positive attitude and his service to students and the community. He touched so many lives in such a positive way and his influence is still apparent today in the community of Thorndale. He will truly be missed!"
Bob passed away Wednesday, October 21, 2009 at his home in Thorndale, reaching the age of 81. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Jack, Jr.
Surviving are; his wife of 59 years, Rosemary Mathis of Thorndale; daughters, Marilynn Carle and husband Bill of Georgetown and Denise Brock of Thorndale; sister, Judy West of Dallas; two grandchildren, Jobi Lane Brock and Chelsea Lee Brock.
Funeral services were Saturday, October 24, 2009 at Phillips & Luckey Funeral Home in Rockdale. Burial was in the Pleasant Retreat Cemetery near Thorndale. Rev. David Persons officiating.
