New Giddings ISD Facilities Enter 21st Century

The new Giddings High School. The new Giddings High School. Giddings ISD hosted an Open House of their new high school and refurbished campuses last Sunday afternoon. Hundreds of people turned out for tours of the completely new Giddings High School, the Middle School, the Giddings Intermediate School, the Elementary School.

Gaeke Construction, the contractor for the projects, had an estimated nine months to complete renovations to the Elementary School, Intermediate School and Middle School projects and just over fourteen months to completely construct the new Giddings High School.

A $38 million bond was passed by the voters in the Giddings ISD in May 2007 by a two to one margin. Giddings ISD has approximately 1900 students and 160 teachers.

The real star attraction of Sunday's tours was the new Giddings High School and the district's new state of the art technology.

The high school facility features high ceilings, lots of windows, curved hallways, a huge mural of stampeding buffalos and so much more. The cafetorium has a food court that touts several food lines that feature Mexican, Italian, hoagie-style sandwiches, salads and more. It also has a state-ofthe art stage flanked by two video screens on either side where students can enjoy district sports events and highlights. Giddings Rotary will be using the cafetorium, beginning in 2010, to host their monthly Country Music Monday and will be able to take advantage of the technology offered by the facility.

Superintendent Michael S. Kuhrt said, "We had a vision of delivering new learning opportunities based on connectivity and real-time interaction before we began the district projects. To accomplish that, we connected students, faculty and staff by revamping our infrastructure. That's when the district turned to Cisco Systems, Inc. to help us transform our educational environment to the 21st Century."

The Cisco system provides a unique integrated network platform to manage heating and cooling and other building systems, communications, safety, physical security, and even bells and alarms, along with schoolwide paging. Because of this network, Giddings is poised to generate cost savings and operational efficiencies in the new building.

All in all, the new Giddings High School is an incredible campus that meets the district's goals and will be a selling point for the City of Giddings for years to come. It's something that you think you'd only find in a big city. You have to see it to believe it.
