Lexington at Belton Cross Country Invitational

by Mike Organ

The Lexington Cross Country team opened the 2009 season with a good showing in the Belton CC meet. It had rained the night before, but the course was in good shape. The course was mostly grass with several inclines. The varsity boys and girls teams both finished fifth in the opening meet. "We were glad to run against someone other than our teammates. The course was extremely challenging and our runners did very well in a competitive meet," said Coach Josh Munson.

Coach's comments: "It was nice for the kids to get to race someone other than each other today. We didn't have the highest expectations for this meet, but are rather looking towards being prepared for the big meets at the end of the year. Still today we walked away with a pair of 5th place finishes in what was an extremely competitive meet on a challenging course for us. Both teams did a great job of bunching together, we just need to work on getting the bunch a little closer to the front. That will come with training and time. It's hard to judge teams early in the season, because some are as good as they will be, and some have a long way to go in terms of fitness. I think we fall into the latter group and hope to see steady improvement as we approach the district and regional meets."
