Mabel Schatte Unger

June 16, 1931 - September 8, 2009

Mabel Elnora (Warner-Schatte) Unger, age 78, of Smithville, Texas passed away on Tuesday, September 8, 2009 following complications from congestive heart failure.

Mabel was born June 16, 1931 in Merced, California to Prentice and Grace (Craig) Warner. She was baptized in the United Methodist Church of Merced and confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church of Giddings, Texas.

She met and married her first husband, Andrew Erhardt Schatte, on July 29, 1949. Mabel and Andy moved from Merced, California to Serbin, Texas and later moved to Giddings, Texas where they raised their family of 8 children.

While raising her children, Mabel completed college and continued a career as a Licensed Nurse practicing at several of the medical facilities within Giddings during their 45 years of marriage. Mabel became a widow in 1991 when Andy died.

Mabel was known by many names including, Mom, Grandma, Great Grandma, Aunt and "friend" to everyone.

Three years later Mabel met Edwin Unger, also a widower, and they were married on June 16, 1994. They enjoyed their retirement along with their combined family of 10 children.

Mabel was also a leader in her church community making contributions in Bible Study, Altar Guild, and Mission work in New Mexico. Wherever Mabel went, she shared her love of service to God and to her community of friends.

She went to be with her Lord surrounded by her family and will be dearly missed by family and friends alike.

Mabel is preceded in death by her parents; her only sister, Esta Warner; her first husband, Andrew Schatte; two daughters, Connie Grace Schatte and Marjorie Schatte Alvarado; two son-in-laws John Chambless and Larry Koenning, and one grandson, Willie McKinley.

Surviving Mabel are her two brothers, William (Bill) Warner and Lowell Warner and wife, Laura of Merced, California; brother-in-law, Monroe Schatte and wife, Lucille of Giddings, Texas; sister-in-law, Wanda Shannon of Dallas, Texas; sister-in-law, Louise Hohle of Austin, Texas; brother-in-law, Paul & Charlene Unger of Amarillo, Texas and sister-in-law, Ruth & husband, Edward Reinhardt of Austin, Texas.

Mabel is also survived by husband, Edwin Unger of Smithville; her daughters, Patti Schatte (Koenning) of Houston Texas, Kathi Chambless of Arlington, Texas, Nancy Koslan of Houston Texas; son, Tony Schatte and wife, Sheila of Tomball, Texas; daughter, Susie Harvey and husband, Phillip of Castor, La.; son, Bruce Schatte of Giddings, Texas and son-in-law Gilbert Alvarado and wife, Karen of Houston, Texas; step-son, Michael Unger and wife, Susan of Houston Texas; stepdaughter, Sandra McGuire and husband, Ralph of Spring, Texas and step-son, Stephen Unger and wife Laura of Houston, Texas. She is also survived by 16 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and 17 nephews and nieces.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, September 12, 2009 at Immanuel Lutheran Church, in Giddings Texas burial followed at Giddings City Cemetery.

Serving as pallbearers were Larry Schatte, Monroe Schatte Jr., Martin Werchan, Jonathan Heafner, Matthew Vassera and Nicholas Arri.

Honorary pallbearers were David Schatte, Jamie Schatte, Mark Schatte, Russell Hofferek and Steve Hofferek, Troy Hofferek, Gregory Hofferek and Frank Wilson.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Immanuel Lutheran School Scholarship Fund, Vineyard of Christ Lutheran Church in Rosanky, Texas or to the charity of one's choice.
