Giddings Opens at Liberty Hill

by Mike Organ

In a marquee matchup, Giddings travels to Liberty Hill Friday night to open the season. If the teams are as strong as predicted, this could be a preview of the state championship game at the end of the season.

Giddings suffered a possible setback with both starting quarterbacks from last season not in football this season. The big question is whether transfer Connor Wehr can run Coach Fitzhenry's option offense. Wehr co-quarteracked Magnolia to the third round of the 5A playoffs last season. Magnolia ran another of the now dinosaur offenses, the wishbone, which should make the transition easier.

The Buffaloes big question mark, the offensive line, will be the key to their fortunes this season. The skill positions are well manned with quality returning starters. Corey Brite, Eric Rimes, Marcellus Mack, and David Bradshaw make all the top rushers and receivers minus the quarterbacks from 2008 return.

The Panthers are on a one-game losing streak after getting popped by Celina in the 2008 season finale. Gone are all but one starter on offense for the Panthers and just three starters are back on the highly regarded defense.

Liberty Hill runs a dinosaur offense of sorts. The winged-T is an offense that was very popular in the late 50's and early 60's. Some of today's grandparents probably ran the offense. It was and is a very efficient offense that utilizes the run to move the ball. The wing-T set up has two or three backs faking or getting the ball on every snap. The defense cannot take a play off because the ball may come right through the resting area. The Panthers did for two state championships and a finalist in the last three years.

Overlooked is the Panther defense that allows the offense to be so conservative. The hustling, ball-hawking defense is the real reason Panthers have been so successful. Look for Giddings to have their hands full with the rebuilding Panthers.

The Panthers' JV went 5-2 last year against some high quality opposition. Are they ready for varsity ball? They have not had any varsity experience.

Giddings should take out some frustrations from narrow defeats by Liberty Hill in the past. Giddings should win this one and possibly by a wide margin.
