Barbara Jane Lay

September 10, 1942 - August 22, 2009

Barbara Jane Lay, 66, of Lexington passed away peacefully in her home surrounded by her family on Saturday, August 22, 2009. She was born in Lee County, Texas to Lee and Berta Qualls. Barbara married Ray Lay on November 16, 1960 and was blessed with three daughters. She was an extraordinary seamstress sewing everything from regular clothes to Halloween outfits to school activity uniforms to prom dresses and bridesmaids dresses for her daughters' weddings. Several years ago, Barbara decided to begin quilting and knitting. She made over 100 blankets with tender loving care for friends and family members.

Barbara is survived by her husband of 48 years and her three daughters, Theresa and Jeff Chatham of Arlington, Sherrie and Jeffrey Zgabay of Lexington and Tammie Lay of Giddings. She had four grandchildren, which she loved to spoil. They are Lindsey and Kyle Chatham, Jacob Suehs and Rachel Zgabay and grandpuppy Addie Rae. She is also survived by her sister, Bethel Blaha of Dime Box.

She was preceded in death by her parents, sisters Berta (Cotton) Urban, Clara Belle Homsley and Dorothy (Dot) Snapp, and brother, Robert (Sonny) Qualls.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, August 26, 2009 at Faith Temple in Lexington, Texas with Rev. Jim Moore officiating. Burial followed in the Lexington Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Brazos Valley Hospice or to the Cancer Clinic of Bryan.
