Giddings/Rockdale Scrimmage

by Mike Organ

The Giddings Buffaloes did something opponents are unaccustomed to Saturday morning. They threw the football, and threw it effectively. Transfer quarterback Connor Wehr threw three scoring passes in the scrimmage with Rockdale.

Rockdale was able to pressure the Buff quarterback several times but Wehr was still able to get the ball to his receivers. The Buffs have a lot of team speed and have athletes that can catch the ball. Eric Rimes out of the backfield, Corey Brite, and Marcellus Mack the Buffs have plenty of headaches for defensive backfields. With all the passing, Giddings still has the triple option running attack in their playbook. Rimes and Wehr can still do the mesh correctly and the pitch is still there for big gains. Even with the capable passing attack, defenses will still have to stop the running attack to bring the Buffs down in a game.

A Giddings fan said he talked to one of the LaVernia coaches that was in attendance at the scrimmage. The LV coach wanted to know if he was at the right field because of Giddings' reputation for a vaunted running attack. He was afraid the head coach would think he did not know what he was doing or what scrimmage he attended.

Rockdale has a good offense that tested the Buff defense in the scrimmage. Their passing offense and two quick running backs gave the Buffs a good workout. The defense has more experience than the offensive line but still have work to do to reach the level of efficiency desired by coaches.
