Local Tractsters Fare Well at Jr. Olympic Qualifier
The LC Express Track Club recently competed at the 2009 AAU Area 14 Jr Olympic National Qualifier Meet held at Dragon Stadium in Round Rock, Texas on July 14- 18, 2009. The team was quite successful and 61 athletes on the team advanced to the 2009 AAU Jr Olympic Nationals which will be held at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa on August 1-8, 2009.
There were some local and former residents of Lexington that advanced to Nationals and some that competed very well but came up short of advancing. The local athletes that competed and advanced to Nationals in their respective age categories are: Jaqualyn Crawford who placed 1st in the 400 meter dash (1:06), 2nd in the 200 meter dash (28:86) and was on the winning 4x400 meter relay along with teammates Lance Carter, Keshun Cooper and Christopher Dobbins. Vance Kassner placed 2nd in the 3000 meter run (12:09) and 3rd in the 4x400 meter relay along with teammates Jay Cooper, Benjamin Flores and T.J. Tennell. Kolton Allen also advanced to Nationals in the 3000 meter run, placing 4th (13:57).
Also competing in various events, but not advancing to Nationals were Jay Cooper who placed 5th in the 80 meter hurdles (16:59) and Jacob Townsend who placed 7th (18.50) in the same event. Jaden Tucker placed 8th in the 800 meter run (3:14) and 17th in the 400 meter run (1:28). Jacob Townsend placed 16th in the 800 meter run (3:18) and Kolton Allen who placed 17th (3:18) in the same event. In the 1500 meter run, Vance Kassner placed 10th (5:46) and Kolton Allen placed 13th (6:18). Keshun Cooper placed 8th in the long jump (10'11"). Vaughn Kassner placed 7th in the 3000 meter run (10:39), 10th in the 2000 meter steeplechase (8:26) and 15th in the 1500 meter run (5:17).
Elexus Cooper placed 28th in the 100 meter dash (18:53) and 23rd in the 400 meter dash (1:33). In the youngest age category, Ashunti Cooper placed 50th in the 100 meter dash (22.36) and 32nd in the 400 meter dash (1:55). Elexus and Ashunti Cooper along with teammates Madison Huot and Naudia Segura competed in the 4x100 meter relay but were disqualified.
The LC Express Track Club practices at the Giddings High School track weekly during the months May-July and competes at various track meets in the Central Texas area during those months. The team is head coached by Tony Francis, Sr who has been coach- ing the team for nearly 30 years. This year was one of the more successful years for the track club.
