George Elwood Berger

June 13, 1924 - July 21, 2009

George was born on June 13, 1924 in Manheim, Texas to Willie & Elenora (Behrend) Berger. He was baptized on June 28, 1924 at Ebenezer Lutheran Church by the Rev. C.W. Riske and confirmed on April 10, 1938 at Ebenezer Lutheran Church by the Rev. A.O. Kaltwasser. His confirmation verse was Psalm 143:10 "Teach me to do Your will, for you are my God; Your Spirit is good. Lead me in the land of uprightness."

During World War II, he served in the Army with Company C, 300th Combat Engineers Battalion and was in five major campaigns: Normandy, Northern France, Battle of the Bulge, Rhineland and Central Europe.

After the War, he became employed with Brown & Root, Inc. where he worked for 33 years.

On October 10, 1953 he was united in marriage with Golda Brehm at Christ Lutheran Church in Houston, Texas by the Rev. G.W. Obenhaus. This marriage was blessed with three children, Joyce, Raymond and Wayne.

George served as Northeast District Commissioner for Boy Scouts of America in Houston. He was a member of Christ Lutheran Church in Houston and served in several capacities there as well as with the Greater Houston Sunday School Superintendents.

He retired from Brown & Root, Inc. in 1979 and returned to the Manheim area where he and Golda built their home and he again became a member of Ebenezer Lutheran Church. He enjoyed ranching, gardening and woodworking.

Mr. Berger passed away July 21, 2009 at this home.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Irma Farrack & Bernice Edtmiller; three brothers, Clarence, Herbert & Elferd Berger and a son-in-law, Stanley Anderson.

He is survived by his wife, Golda Berger of Giddings; daughter, Joyce & Jerry Weaver of Burnet; sons, Raymond & Sherry Berger of Giddings and Wayne Berger of Giddings; step-granddaughter, Rebecca & Jack Allen of Giddings; three step-great grandchildren, Shannon, Shane & Sarah Allen of Giddings; brother, Marvin & Eleanor Berger of Paige; sister-inlaw, Yvonne Berger of Tomball as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services for George Berger, 85 of Giddings, were held on July 24, 2009 at Ebenezer Lutheran Church in Manheim, Texas with Rev. Herb Keistman officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Serving as pallbearers were Jim Jaeger, Calvin Berger, Mark Woelfel, Robert Jurk, Robert Biebas and Tim Exner.
