McDade Marks 61st Watermelon Festival with Grand Parade

The McDade Watermelon Festival kicks off festivities in celebration of its 61st year on Saturday, July 11, 2009, with the Grand Parade beginning at 10:30 a.m. The parade will wind its way down the main street in McDade, which is situated ten miles east of Elgin on US Highway 290. Before the parade begins, folks vying to have the largest watermelon will take part in the Melon Weigh-In from 7 to 9 a.m. in downtown McDade. At 8 that morning, the car show will get started and concessions, arts and craft booths and more will open at 9 a.m.

Barbecue sandwiches will be available from 11 a.m until 2:30 p.m. A horseshoe pitching contest begins at 11:30 a.m. and Bingo will start at noon.

There will be music, provided by The Crop Dusters, from 12:30 - 3:30 p.m. Contestents will spit watermellon seeds at 2 p.m.,and pitch washers at 2:30 p.m.

A barbecue dinner will be served at 4:30 p.m., with the food prepared by the Last Call.

As the day winds down, the Prize Melon Auction will be held and the Queen's Coronation will occure at 7:30 p.m. There will be a free melon feast after the crowning of the queen.

Admission is free. Bring the whole family to McDade for the 61st Annual Watermelon Festival for a day of old fashioned family fun.
