Summer Leagues for VB and BB

by Mike Organ

Lexington athletes are using the summer to improve on their skills at various sports. Cameron hosts a volleyball league for girls and a basketball league for boys. Thorndale has a summer league for girls basketball. Lexington has teams entered in all.

Kevin and Krystalyn Patshcke coach the varsity volleyball team. The team roster is: Karley Wren, Marley Ross, Megan Scantlin, Angel Parks, Emily Bell, Heather Mills, Kacee Letbetter, Shelby Tackett, Jodie Armstrong, and Stefanie Albreight. The team plays on Monday nights and is very competitive. Thrall, Thorndale, Rogers, Rosebud-Lott, Buckholts, Milano, Cameron, and Franklin are the other teams in the summer league.

The Lexington varsity defeated Thrall, Thorndale, and RL the first week. They lost to a fine Rogers team. In week two Lexington beat Academy, Buckholts, and lost to RL. The team will play Milano this week and Cameron, Franklin, and Rogers again on the 15th. June 22 and 29 will be the league tourney.

Byron Wren is coaching a high school girls basketball team in the Thorndale league. The team roster is: Karley Wren, Malissa Sanders, Mackenzie Brown, Johna Alford, Miranda Jones, Megan Scantlin, Veronica Richardson, Angel Parks, Emily Bell, Deja Griffin, and Nicole Koch.

Lexington beat Thorndale #2, lost to T-dale #1 in week one, lost to Cameron #1 and beat Thrall #2. The team will play Rockdale #1 and Thorndale #2 on the 16th and June 23 they will play Rockdale #2 and Thrall #1. There will be a season ending tournament on June 30 based on seeds from the regular season.

Wren also coaches a team in the Cameron league that plays on Thursdays. The team roster is: Jason Washington, Marcus Casassa, Zach Lay, Gregg Willrich, Josh Murray, Garry Gooper, Kaelan Blok, Avahn Crumb, Xavier Ward, Phillip Hagen, Julien Clark, and Kelden Wren. Teams in the league are: Cameron A&B, Milano, Salado, Caldwell, Giddings, and Lexington.

In week one Lexington defeated Giddings and lost to Milano. In week two they defeated Caldwell and Rockdale. In week three they defeated Cameron B and lost to Cameron A. Last Thursday they played district foe Salado. Salado led most of the game by 10 to 12 points. In the last 2 or 3 minutes of the game, Lexington came back and got within five points with less than 20 seconds left in regulation. Salado missed a shot, Keldon Wren took a three point shot and nailed it with less than 10 seconds left on the clock. As Salado passed the ball in, Julien Clark stole it at half court, drove to the basket and sank a lay-up at the buzzer to put the game into overtime. The rules in this league state that an overtime victory is decided by who makes the first basket. Salado inbounded the ball first in overtime, Lexington got the ball back and scored first. That was it, a victory for Lexington.
