On Friday May 1, 2009 Lexington held the 1st Annual Homecoming Pet Contest. Approximately 30 proud pet owners brought their beloved animals and participated in a variety of competitions.

The Pet Contest began with Best Dressed competition. There was a variety of pets in costumes. Some pets were dressed as celebrities like Marlon Brando and Carol Burnett, other pets were in pretty dresses and adorned with rhinestones, and there were pets dressed as princesses, as a rodeo bronc rider, and as an amigo from south of the border. All of the owners did an incredible job in designing their pet's costumes and the audience enjoyed seeing all of the creativity…as well as watching the pets stay in their costumes long enough for the judging to be completed. The winners for the Best Dressed pet competetion were: 1st place - "Tequila Wayne" the Chihuahua- owned by Becky Eyner, 2nd place - "Valentine" the Chihuahua- owned by Kolton Allen, 3rd place - "Abby" the Shih Tzu - owned by Tana Renfroe.

The "Most Talented" Winners On the left is "Lady" who won 1st place - owned and shown by Phyllis Floyd, in the middle is "Pepper" who won 2nd place - owned and shown by Lisa Stover, on the right is "Oreo" who won 3rd place ("Oreo" is a rabbit.) - owned and shown by Whitney Willrich. The Most Talented competition was highly entertaining. Pets performed a variety of tricks, stunts, and obedience commands. Feats of ball catching, dancing, ball bouncing, "talking", counting, and rolling over were performed by the competing pets. The stunt of "playing dead" was uniquely performed by a bunny, which charmed the crowd, as well as peaked the interest of a number of the dogs at the contest. It was obvious that a lot of time, patience and dedication from the owners had been given to the fine training of their pets. The winners for the Most Talented pet competition were: 1st place - "Lady" the Golden Retriever - owned by Phyllis Floyd, 2nd place - "Pepper" the Border Collie - owned by Lisa Stover, 3rd place - "Oreo" the bunny - owned by Whitney Willrich.

The "Best Overall" competition featured all of the pets that came out for the Pet Contest. Each pet paraded in front of the crowd and judges, strutting their stuff and showing their style. It was not easy for the judges to make their final decisions, as all of the pets were winners, in their opinions. Once decisions were made, and votes were tallied, it was determined that the Best Overall pets were: 1st place - "Bubbles" the Yorkshire Terrier - owned by Victoria Mathis, 2nd place - Pokey" the Golden Retriever mix - owned by Hallie Floyd, 3rd place - "Gillian" the Collie - owned by Richard Jones.

Judges for the Pet Contest were Leigh Ann Ward and Sylvia DeClue. Chairs and coordinators for the Pet Contest were Lucy Torn and Kathy Newcomer. The Pet Contest was sponsored by the Double K Ranch.
