Wanda Gabriel Mayes

December 24, 1927 - April 16, 2009

Funeral services were held for Wanda Gabriel Mays on Tuesday, April, 21, 2009 at 7 p.m. at the Blue United Methodist Church on CR 696 near Lexington. Visitation from 5 until 7 p.m. Tuesday at the church.

There will also be a memorial service at the St. Andrews Presbyterian Church on Wells Branch Parkway in Austin at 7 p.m. Thursday April 23, 2009.

Wanda Gabriel Mayes, 81, of the Blue Community died Thursday, April 16, 2009 in the Renaissance Villa in Rockdale.

She was preceded in death by a son, Miles Gray Reynolds and her parents.

Wanda was born December 24, 1927 in Taylor, Texas. She was one of two daughters born to the union of Fred G. and Vera Threadgill Gabriel. She grew up in Taft, Texas and was an avid barrel racer and member of the Turtle Association in Taft.

As an adult, she was a famed Austin seamstress and her clientele included Lady Bird Johnson and her daughter Lucy as well as Carole Keeton Rylander Strayhorn. After retirement as a seamstress she became a horse breeder in Blue, Texas.

Wanda is survived by her daughters, Carol Sue Flinn Smith and husband David of Crosby and Chevelle Mayes of Austin; sons, Matthew Mayes of Blue and King Bob Still of Rockport; sister, Sharon Gabriel Leichti and husband Peter of Switzerland; numerous grandchildren and greatgrandchildren.
