Washer and Horseshoe Pitchin'

Old Fashioned Fun for the Whole Family
by Candace Walch

Homecoming is upon us once again. We have been making preparations for the upcoming festivities for the past several months, and now are just weeks away from the big event. The washer and horseshoe tournaments, which were started to raise interest in Lee County Go-Texan competition, have been taking place for many years. My husband and I took over the competitions in 2002.

It takes a lot to run these tournaments, but with the help and generosity of local residents it has made our jobs a lot easier. Georgeena Arnett is kind enough to let us use her lot year after year to host the tournament. In the past, Troy Walch and Rick Perry have donated sand for us to use in the pits. Last year David Boettcher of Boettcher Construction Services made the donation.

The washer and horseshoe tournaments are a team competition. An entry fee of $10 per team is collected at sign in. Prizes are award to the first, second, and third place teams. The prize money is from entry fees and the trophies are donated by various distributors. M & S Distributing in La Grange, Wright Distributing in Bastrop, and Mike Hopkins Distributing in Brenham have always been wonderful to work with.

Many people from Lee County and surrounding areas come out just to participate in these tournaments. They bring with them family and friends who go out on the Square and enjoy the arts and crafts, car show, food booths, and other various activities. We are very pleased to see how much our turnout has grown over the past six years. Our first year ,there were less than ten washer teams, and last year we had over twenty. We have seen the same growth rate with the horseshoe teams as well.

Please come out this Homecoming and visit us during these competitions. We are located southwest of the Square directly behind DCB Feed. We hope to see you there.
