Lexington Pops Salado 5-1

by Mike Organ

The Lexington Lady Eagles solidified their hold on second place Friday night with a 5-1 win at Salado. The win makes Lexington 6-1 in district action.

The old adage "a walk is good as a hit" proved to be true for Lexington. Lexington received eight walks in the contest. The Salado pitcher walked in two runs and Ashton Johnston singled home two runs with one of only two Lexington safeties.

Johnston singled home two in the second inning to give Lexington all the runs needed for the win. Rachel Knipstein led off with a walk; Sara Knipstein hit a grounder to short that was bobbled for an error in front of Johnston's tworun single.

In the fifth Ally Abshire walked, Jessica Parish walked and Shelby Tackett reached on a fielder's choice to load the bases. Haley Jatzlau walked to force home the first run. Megan Scantlin walked on four pitches to force home another run. Tackett then stole home on the most exciting play of the game. The catcher was not paying attention to the runner on third. Rachel Knipstein faked a bunt as the third baseman charged toward home with Tackett right behind. When the catcher lobbed the ball back to the pitcher Tackett broke safely for the plate with the fifth and final run.

Rachel pitched a masterful game allowing her teammates to make plays behind her. She struck out four and walked none in an artful display of pitching.
